Very good scanner for the price

I purchased this scanner two years ago and used it to scan about 1500 photos over about six to seven months. It's worked great and the ArcSoft PhotoStudio also did a pretty good job. I don't know how it compares to the Adobe Photoshop products, but it did what I needed for correcting photos once they were scanned. It's very light weight and I like that it's powered by connecting the USB cable to the computer, so there's one less cable to deal with. Another nice feature is being able to scan something into a PDF document. It's also worked well with Windows XP and I haven't had any trouble out of the drivers. I'm pleased with it and glad I bought it.
Bad Scanner won't complete scan off track.

There are numerous flaws in this design which are common for me with Canon scanners, etc. Though I swore off Canon products awhile back, I simply can't live without a scanner that is USB powered and fits alongside my MacBook Pro in a backpack. However, I only got to use this a few times before it went off the track and no longer finishes scans. There are no physical signs of abuse and it simply doesn't want to ride it's own track. It has an unusual lock that actually allows the scanner to run against when the lock is on. That is poor Canon design at best. It may have upset the scanner so that it could no longer work. At any rate, I don't even remember if this particular scanner was any good in the first place. I had an older model that worked fine, but Canon's drivers no longer worked when Mac OS progressed to 10.5 and so on. Therefore, I was forced by Apple scheming with Canon to have to buy a new scanner. What a piece of junk the new one is. The buttons never worked anyway and I had to run it manually with the software when it used to scan. Canon needs a new CEO, but not the one at Microsoft or HP please.
Great hardware, truly awful drivers & software

Reviewer: Peter J. Davidson,
I'm reviewing this as someone who uses it entirely from a Mac. I can't speak to how good/bad it is on a windows machine. And I'd love to use it from my linux laptop, but drivers simply don't exist for it on that platform.

This scanner is kind of heartbreaking. On the one hand, the hardware is compact, extremely light, and generally well made. On the other, the drivers and software that come with it are infuriating, exasperating, and close to useless. It took me literally days to work out how to stop it defaulting back to preset scan resolutions (I run a bunch of servers for a large institution, and have been using macs for 15 years - it's not like I struggle with computers). The scanning software doesn't multitask - you literally can't do anything else with your computer while a scan is in progress - what is this, 1995? Further, if you set it to scan in image format, it absolutely insists that you tell it which application to open the resulting image in (or it defaults to the bundled garbage image editor), and opens the image as soon as that individual scan is finished. Which might be fine if you're scanning one or two photos, but just gets in the way if you're working your way through a pile of images, or trying to do something custom with it like using it to feed images to a script or website. Which brings me to the final point - the drivers have no API. The scanner doesn't talk to SANE. The garbage driver/editing software that comes with it isn't even applescriptable. You can't program or script around this scanner at all, making it completely useless for any batch operation.

As I say, it's a real shame. The hardware is nice, but (on a mac at least) the driver software makes it close to unusable. Definitely look elsewhere if you want a scanner for anything more than the very occasional scanning of one or two documents of photos.

Technology makes your life easier and this CanoScan will do the same. Incredibly affordable, easy to install and compact. I liked it so much, I bought one for my mom.

Reviewer: David Michel,
The old Canon scanner finally failed so got a newer model for replacement. It does do a better job of scanning something that does not sit perfectly flat that the older model. It is the software that comes with it that really makes the difference because it is so much easier to use for editing pictures. Over the years I've tried a few other brand of scanners. To be fair I've not compared current model against current model. But Canon has consistently provided me with a good quality product so that now I don't even consider switching brands.
